Iron is a mineral that the body needs to produce red blood cells. Anemia is when the body does not get enough iron. This condition is associated with excessive tiredness and weakness as there are insufficient red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body. ​

From puberty to menopause, women need a higher iron intake due to loss during menstruation. The amount of blood, and therefore iron, lost during periods depends on many factors such as genetics, weight, height, age or even the type of contraception used.​
